While it works okay, and I am all for being a MacGyver when needed, but come on. If given the option of real plates, use real plates.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I teraFLops post. Just buy some real armor...don't be a goob by "building your own".

The whole point of me building some is to see how effective it is so that after SHTF if you do not have enough body armor for everyone then you can see what works and what doesn't work so you can make your own. My eventual goal is to find a way to make my own armor that will stop a standard 5.56 round.

Update. I am heading to a new range tomorrow with a few people from my church. I do not know if they will let me test the DIY body armor but I am bringing it all with me in case they let me. As I stated before, my goal is to have DIY body armor that can stop a round from an AR.

That would be impossible since my only biological child is a girl!

Besides, she isnít big enough to shoot her rifle yet. She is about 3í tall and barely weighs 32 pounds!

Finally I was able to test them but only with 9mm ball ammo. The plates I made out of ceramic floor tile and denim did great and stopped the round 100% with only a small bulge on the back. The plates I made with alternating 2 license plates and 2 tiles failed with the round passing through everything and the tiles breaking badly.
