Default Fodder - the prepper's best winter feed option?

I've just now stumbled upon the fodder concept for small livestock. I was looking for a sustainable feed to replace the bulk, expense and dependence on hay when I found fodder on the internet. Anyone heard of this or have used this for winter feed? From what I have read, barley is the best seed for fodder and you can adjust the types and mixes of seeds for all kinds of livestock, like rabbits, chickens, goats, horses, etc.

I ran across a article on another site about this very topic. I will try and find a link to post up.
From what I have found it is practical and works well. I am thinking about giving it a shot with my chickens to see how they do with it.
