Default X9.3 solar flare on September 6th

Despite the fact that we are in a solar minimum period right now, a rather large sun spot belched out a strong X9.3 solar flare. It is unknown at this point if this flare is earth directed.

This is not going to be a grid destroyer event, but there may be issues in the coming days with anything that uses satellites.

"Coronagraph images from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory confirm that the explosion also produced a coronal mass ejection (CME) with an Earth-directed component."

They also have a chart for chance of more X class and M class flares and they say there is a 50% chance of more X class flares.

Only a 9.3. Disruption of some radio, but nothing serious. Wake me when a 30+ shows up.

It all depends on the duration of the flare. If it was a very short flare then I agree. But if it was a long duration flare then that could make the results be more than what a typical X9 would be.

To put this flare into perspective, it was the strongest flare we have seen in 10 years, and the 14th strongest flare since 1979.

An X- 9.3 is not insignificant, it's the biggest measured in many a year.

But as Daelith says, a 9.3 in terms of lifestyle disruption for most of us is small potatoes, a bit of static, maybe some interference on some bands of radio frequency. A 30+ is where we start talking about Carrington Effect class eruptions. I wonder, was the original "Carrington" event during a solar minimum or maximum cycle?

I am also wondering if solar eruptions like this "stack" the earth's upper atmosphere with the type of charged particles that emit an EMP when hit by a gamma ray burst from a high-altitude nuke? Just idle wondering here. If they did, it would make sense for an adversary anticipating an unannounced attack to wait for such an event before launching an EMP, for maximum effect. Sadly I do not have the ability to work that one out on my own.
