From there, I have read that a blast over Ohio would be the most effective at knocking out a very large majority of our grid.
Don't give that little prick any new ideas ! Knowing the way most people here in Ohio live hand to mouth, it would soon be a free-for-all, and target practice for the prepared.

Given they've put stuff into orbit and have ICBMs that have hit 2,802 km in altitude, I wouldn't doubt their ability to drop an EMP on the US. Do they have a fusion weapon miniaturized enough to ride that ICBM? Doubtful, but a fission bomb could do a fair amount too. Our saving grace right now is that our ICBM detection systems would probably intercept before they could detonate because it's unlikely they're rockin' MIRVs.

Back during the cold war it was important for ICBM's to be accurate and to detonate at ground level. That is a fairly complicated task for many reasons. That was needed to take out hardened underground missile launch facilities. You have to pinpoint the location because only a direct hit will do. You have to have a delivery system capable of re-entering the atmosphere at tremendous velocity without burning up or coming apart.

With an EMP you circumvent a lot of technical challenges. You don't have to get a direct hit... you can be hundreds of miles off and still get an effective hit. You don't have to withtand re-entry... you are going to blow it up in space where there is essentially not enough atmosphere to be worth mentioning.

If the west doubts his ability to stand and deliver, KJU will be forced to put on a demonstration. This could be taken as an escallation or violate terms of the cease-fire agreement that put the Korean war on hold (it never officially ended). If military action is taken KJU may feel justified in launching whatever he has where it will do the most harm... certainly not "winning" but making for a very costly "victory" for the US.

If they think they can take advantage of a weakened America because of all the and soon to be disasters, they will be wrong. America is strongest when it's weakened.

flock6, that may be the case but the little fat boy in Korea will consider it a win if he knocks America out of superpower status. An EMP burst would do just that. No nation on Earth could retain economic power after an EMP burst.

That's when our prominent motto will be, "down but not out" . Lil Kim's last good thought would be an assumed victory just as he's vaporized.

How darn big can an EMP burst be to bring down our whole Country?

probably a lot smaller than most of us think.

For example, put a small launcher in a tramp freighter in the gulf 50 or so miles from Houston and shoot it straight up and detonate it before we could react. Would take out Houston to probably Tampa. Houston has the vast majority of our petroleum refining as well as virtually all ethylene production.

Or on the west coast do the same over LA and take out one of the biggest ports we have.

Or same over Washington DC - we can only hope (sorry Orangetom) and shut down the government.

Now none of those are the instant killers like a handful of big nukes spaced a few hundred miles apart from our east to west coasts which would take out the whole country at once, but any of those would cause economic disaster. BTW that was apparently the Russian first strike plan but they were going to lannch over the south pole and come at us from the equator - all our early warning radars are in Canada and the northern US looking toward the north pole.

like someone posted earlier, they way for the little guy takes out the big guy is asymmetrical warfare

I have no doubt it's possible, I have no doubt it will be disastrous, I also have no doubt the responsible party will almost immediately regret it. Any and all able bodied American and probably a few illegal immigrants will bring on full retaliation.
