    Default norks threaten emp

we've all speculated that the norks are thinking EMP rather than ground burst.
let's hope they do the trial run over Tokyo or Seoul rather than San Fran.
apparently the norks state run media explicitly mentioned a EMP as their strategy

you will need a Wall Street Journal subscription to read the whole article, but the lead says it all:

Electromagnetic Pulse: North Korea’s Latest Threat Against U.S.
The idea of an EMP attack is to detonate a nuclear weapon miles above the earth with the aim of knocking out power

If an EMP works as many people believe then any country capable of using one on the USA (or other first world country) would get the most bang-for-buck by using one.
A regular nuke strike only effects a relatively small area in comparison.

The only way a pipsqueak can take down a big bruiser is to outsmart him or sucker punch him with a single blow... ala George Mc Fly in Back to the Future.

Unless a nation is prepared to give as good as they get in military conflict they have to employ some kind of asymetric warfare tactic, and at the top of that list would be EMP.

If they have nuclear ambitions they would be foolish NOT to develop EMP tech because that gets them the greatest incapacitating ability for the required investment of resources. It also damages a technologically advanced adversary more than it does their comparitively crude conventional forces.

Assuming the above, all that is left is to advertise the fact and convince your adversary of your willingness to use it... only then does it become an effective deterrent. You would have to be crazy to go to war against the USA with such a disparity of national resources and military clout... thus, KJU seeks to sell the idea that he is indeed, just that whackadoo. If he can sell it convincingly enough without over-selling it to the point that even China considers him a treat to the region, he may just have a successful strategy for keeping his nuclear program in biz. Which is what he thinks NK needs in order to be taken seriously rather than a joke or a pawn.

Another thought I don't think I have heard mentioned is that as long as NK needs oil they need the petrodollar and they see that prerequisite as keeping them dependent to infrastructure that is controlled by adversarial powers. Saddam opened an oil bourse exchange devoid of petrodollars and got invaded and deposed. Iran has been trying for years to develop both nuclear grid and weaponry and have put yhemselves in the crosshairs in so doing. NK may think it needs nuclear weapons to defend a nuclear powered grid at home. As long as they are chained to the petrodollar they are subject to western coercion. Different take on yhings, from KJU's POV.

In a crazy world, it's the crazy man who can get by - and it's about to get cray-cray up in here.

    good take, bruss
I have also heard that Kim thinks the reason we deposed Saddam and Qaddafi was because they had no WMDs.
WMDs are the asymmetric force you speak of and it is widely conjectured that the norks have VX nerve gas (assassinated nork relative in airport w VX)
I also wonder how many sleeper cells Kim has in the US?

I read recently that a nuke that is designed to have strong EMP effects does not have to have a large kiloton or megaton rating. North Korea has also been found to be in possession of Russian EMP weapon plans. A nuke set off a couple hundred miles up yields the greatest EMP effect. From there, I have read that a blast over Ohio would be the most effective at knocking out a very large majority of our grid.

    good article hiwall.
I don't see norks being able to do the optimum which is an air burst at 40km high over central us.
    but Tokyo another story
