    Default Nimitz class carrier dispersal...

Saw this on Info Wars this morning and found it interesting in line with what I saw yesterday on the way home from across the river.

Looking over at the Norfolk Navy Base I saw three of the large Nimitz class carriers tied up at the pier. Having worked on a large number of them in a shipyard..I am very familiar with their outline compared to the Assault Helicopter/Harrier type built down south.

I know that the USS Lincoln is undergoing overhaul...that makes four Nimitz class carriers not deployed and the George Bush in another shipyard makes 5 Carriers not deployed. I do not know the status on the west coast but I could do this simple math right here on the east coast and have a rough idea.. I also know that the USS Enterprise is also in a shipyard...hence that is a lot of large aircraft carriers not deployed.

IN a wartime scenario one of the worst places for any navy ship/boat today is tied up at the pier...verses deployed and moving ..under way.

Nonetheless...that is a lot of carriers not out to sea...

Just some interesting information for which most of the public hasn't a clue.

Whenever something is going down in the world ..one of the questions immediately asked is "Where are the Carriers??" The carriers are never out there alone...they have escorts..including submarines. It is just a quick trip to the water to look across at Norfolk to see what is tied up at the piers. This means most of the escorts are also not deployed.

    Here the Info Wars Story...

I've always thought that aircraft carriers were a excellent way of projecting airpower overseas. My father, an Annapolis Graduate, Navy Commissioned officer & Korean War Vet, opined that in a real war aircraft carriers would survive about 5 minutes and any planes they'd launched were doomed to become submarines unless they could find dry ground to land .....
    Oh well.
I'm not sure why much of the carrier fleet seems to be in port ....maintainace? Paint jobs?
    Hopefully things run smoothly.
I have some old U.S. Navy publications from the 1980s in my library that helped me keep up with these things .... but that was 30 years ago and they are no longer of any relevance in today's world.

Nothing here to see kids, move along, nothing happening, nothing suspicious, just a coincidence.

I don't particularly care for InfoWars.

That being said, the US has 12 carriers, so 6 or so being 'laid-up' is not alarming to me in the least, especially when considering most other US adversaries have one to zero.

All aircraft carriers are in port/recalled/on their way in - none are deployed. I've yet to hear a good explanation of why. I know they've faced heavy deployment and usage and probably are overdue for maintenance, upgrades, and resupply, but doing that all at once sounds risky. We've basically abandoned the Strait of Hormuz to the Iranians and the Ukraine, as well as the South China Sea to pirates.

long story short, the only one that's not in it's home port or a shipyard of some sort is the Eisenhower. It's in the Atlantic on it's way home right now.

    I know ...I know...

I recall a time when I've seen four Nimitz carriers tied up at Naval Station Norfolk...but I knew there were others out to sea.

I just don't remember a time when I saw or knew of none of them on station anywhere in the world. That to me is unusual...even because of a holiday.

Interesting list you have posted there Austin Rob. I have been on at least half of that list of Nimitz ships in doing said work on them.

Most surface sailors have little idea how vulnerable they are to a modern submarine and skilled crews with modern weapons. Modern Mines are torpedoes..not that yard sale stuff you see floating or on a thether line with spikes sticking out all over them.

This is also the reason they often have at least one submarine going along with them and often in place before the carriers put to sea.

You are not to far off the mark there TommyGun with what your father stated.

I do know that in maneuvers wherein the surface guys said a submarine could not get in close to them our boats have gone right under the carriers and taken periscope pictures of the bottoms of the hulls to show them different.

Grant you now ....equipment has gotten much better over the years for surface ships but so too for submairnes.

Nonetheless..I don't remember a time when we did not have at least one or two carriers and their escorts out to sea.
