    Default Weird Dream Last Night

Not sure where to post a dream episode but I figure "stories" is as good a place as any.

Being a dream it isn't supposed to make sense in the traditional meaning of the word. But looking at it symbolically maybe it's a snapshot of a lot of things on my mind lately.

In this dream I was on a college campus. I was a student and part-time employee of the college in their computer network department. There was some kind of conflict going on between the students and the school's administration... the students were using their networking and connectedness to expose the injustices done by the college, bring pressure on them to change, and using it to organize and coordinate events. The school realized this and was taking steps to limit that ability by building restrictions and bots into the school's network. I was on part of the team that was going to be performing that work and we were all issued plans on how it was to be done. The student-facing interface was to be the same, but a whole new back-end was being built that contained filters and censors on content, and monitored certain patterns of communication so it could be thwarted or "managed".

I was very concerned about this and immediately brought Edward Snowden into the loop (he was there on campus, not sure in what capacity, but definitely on the side of the students) and showed him the diagram with the new infrastructure. While we looked at it my big question for him was whether to put my foot down and refuse to participate in building such a monstrosity, or pretend to go-along in order to build in a back door and to be an insider (a "mole") so I would continue to get a head's up on new efforts in the works, so the students could take steps to circumvent any new limits/restrictions.

There was this girl who was a student... for some reason, the school wanted to nab her... they had some of the students on their side and there was a coordinated plan for them to grab her after one of her classes... but they weren't sure which one, so they were planning to cover ALL of her classes to be sure of getting her. Well, one of them leaked the plan to us and we were trying to find a place to hide her out. I went into the network operations center, where you could locate any student anywhere on campus, while Ed took her all over the camps... under bleachers, behind buildings, into basements, even in the bushes out near the edge of the campus. It was no good... everywhere they went, I could track them, there was no escaping "the Eye of Sauron". I went out and joined them in their last hiding place and broke the bad news... there was no hiding to be had.

On our way back to the school we were on a graveled jogging path, so we pretended to be coming back from a run. For some bizarre reason I was in bare feet, and the pea-gravel hurt my feet but it didn't keep me from jogging. As we rounded the last corner of the path to come back toward the main campus there was a 30 foot flagpole in front of the school, and the most tattered oversize American flag I had ever seen was flapping languidly in the gentle breeze. It was basically in shreds. I remember thinking we must have had some unbelievable winds to tear it up that badly... but looking back, seeing as how all the leaves were still on the trees, it's another symbolic presence in the dream no doubt.

I recall meeting an old woman... she was a resident at an assisted-care, memory-care facility, but had permission to go out to a little cafe and get a sweet roll. She was trying to get back to her home with her sweet roll on a little plate with a fork. Somehow I knew in the dream that this old woman was a former 60's radical... I remember flashing on the Soviet flag... and she was a die-hard marxist... but she didn't behave unpleasantly. Even knowing this about her, I still went to help her as she was walking unsteadily and had dropped her fork in the dirt. I made some pleasant small talk as I escorted her back to her facility, got her settled in, and brought her a clean fork.

    That's it. That's all I remember anyway.

If anyone wants to chime in with "meaning" for the sake of amusement by all means, have at it. I have a few thoughts of my own but will wait until others have had a say.

Why confide in limits when we should be free everywhere not restricted to planes of domains.

Social engineering had designed society to look out for itself but has failed in properly ascertaining the knowledge of what a real threat or harm is. Constant division. Over unity has to be bad.

Why conform to limits of the world much less the mind but free in more than just spirit. Don't let dogmas of old and regulation of new, rule U!

The Campus could be the U.S. and the students, the Americans who produce and pay taxes. The Administration could be the criminal enterprise called administrative government. The Woman student running and hiding was probably beyond reproach and a threat to the elites. The elites always have true believers in slavery and oppression, who accept their chains. Not catching her immediately like Gestapo was because of vanity and bureaucracy. That and the elites always misunderstand us and miscategorize their opponents.

The running and hiding was of course the electronic surveillance systems and the evasion was that humans are fallible and the elites are human. The running track shows the importance of preparations such as physical fitness training and other basic disciplines.

The tattered Flag was the result of the U.S. in a "civil war" and the flag was flying so the elites did not win or there was a lull in the battle.

The old woman represents the old socialists, Wilson, Roosevelt, Johnson, Carter. The U.S.S.R. collapsed. The old woman being in a facility is that she was in her utopian environment but not free. Dropping her fork was representative of her acknowledging defeat. You helping her was verifying that the Marxists and socialists did not annihilate the patriots.

The absence of the Woman and Snowden is that they went on their own way or perished during the order of battle.

I had a strange dream too, but seriously, I'm not sure I want to make it public. LOL YOU GUYS ALREADY THINK I'm" out there" sometimes. LOL

BRUSS, Your dream sound more like you are trying to find ways to escape something. It sounds like you are trapped in a round room, looking for a corner to break free from a socialistic environment.

My dream was about riding a very large moose through a vast thicket trying to rescue someone else on another large wild animal, (A giant wild hog.) who couldn't break free. Weird!

By knowing our faults today we can prepare for tomorrow's adversities.

In this dream I was on a college campus. I was a student and part-time employee of the college in their computer network department.
So I'm kind of an insider/outsider to the system. I work for the school, yet I'm also a student... but my sympathies clearly lie with the student population.

I have worked in IT for 20 years so this part isn't far fetched. I've been party to many projects where changes are made behind the scenes that are completely transparent to the users, usually to accommodate some change to a business policy - you don't want to have to re-train the users so keeping the part they see the same, is usually preferable. However, in the dream this is being done for covert reasons, and mirrors my suspicions that the internet can, may, or is being used for purposes we would generally not be happy to hear about, such as collecting data on us and hoarding it for future exploitation - that brand new multi-acre state-of-the-art data center in Utah the NSA built isn't just for them to file their taxes. So this part of the dream reflects my concerns about a primary tool for resisting tyranny being turned against us and subverted to serve tyrannical interests instead.

Snowden is a complex figure that lots of people have conflicted feelings about. He broke the law, and arguably put some American interests at risk by leaking his findings. If you stop and think about it, put yourself in his shoes. You are trapped in a quandary between your knowledge of what is right (and wrong) and you also know what is legal (and illegal) and the two systems are clearly in conflict. This situation was created first of all by the powerful and unaccountable bureaucrats who decided to spy on EVERYBODY for the sake of maybe catching one SOMEBODY and they did it because they could get away with it, because they would keep the whole thing secret and make it a crime for anyone to blow the whistle. If there's no system for anyone to raise their hand, say "Hey, we ought not to be doing this! Let's take this back to the drawing board and come up with a better idea!" then there is no check, no balance, on the exercise of that power, and that is the very definition of tyranny. So Snowden chose what he saw as the lesser of evils... tell the world and all of us make the call. Well, he's been criminalized and exiled for trying to do the right thing and if nothing else, I believe it points to the sincerity of his good intentions, because of all he has sacrificed for what he thought was right. If push comes to shove and I have a tyrannical bureacracy breathing down the back of my neck some day, that's the kind of person I will want backing me up... someone who is more concerned about what is right than what is legal according to the tyrannical bureaucracy.

It also occurs to me that I may someday be faced with the choice of being a part of a system I abhor in order to help bring it down, rather than having the luxury of maintaining a powerless purity of principle. I hate the thought of that but it's the sort of practical sacrifice that is sometimes warranted. I'm sure many in the US military, when contemplating Hillary as their CIC, have had similar waves of revulsion and resignation.

So who does this girl in the dream represent? Maybe she represents the students as a whole. Maybe she represents that one person out of a hundred who is made an example of, to keep the others in line. Maybe she is an abstraction such as Liberty. Regardless, he frustration at the inability to protect her from the universal surveillance state is becoming a real-world concern. Every day it is getting harder and harder to do the simplest thing without leaving tracks and traces that can later be followed, if the all-seeing eye so desires to make your life unbearable. From red-light cameras to license plate readers to chips in all of our payment cards. It's a reflection of my concern and belief that you cannot truly be free unless you can be private and our privacy is a rapidly vanishing commodity.

I think this represents the winds of change having taken a toll on our once glorious liberties. We are giving up more and more freedom to gain an ever-elusive security and finding at the end that we have neither. The dreams of the founders for us, their heirs of liberty, have been shredded and lie in tatters. Jogging barefoot down a graveled path represents what a deeply painful realization this is.

My belief is that the age of managing the world by putting a gun to people's head and telling them what to believe, and how to behave, is at an end. Of course the old Soviet state exemplified this but so did the totalitarian regimes of Hitler, Mao, and many others. I think the world is going into a time of change the likes of which has never been seen and our great republic here is no exception. I do believe that in an effort to keep control there will be ever increasing clamp-downs and more and more restrictions on any kind of real freedom. I think people around the world are going to wake up and rebel against this oppression and the whole thing is going to go BOOM in a spectacular fashion. After that, when the weeping and wailing dies down and folks begin to rebuild from the ashes, I think there will be a realization that the answer isn't building more government and more control... the answer is, building better people, who care about each other and the world around them, who aren't selfish and callous by nature, who aren't the race of sociopaths we seem to be morphing into currently. When they start to make that change, and educate people, then we will see the kind of Utopia that mankind has dreamt of for centuries, come near fruition. When folks are educated about WHY they need to participate in making things go right, they will, without anyone having to point a gun at them or threaten them. They will do it because they care about what's in their fellow man's best interest. The old woman in the dream is a symbol of that outmoded thinking that glorifies central management at the expense of people just doing what they know and feel is right, of letting systems find their true and natural balance. That kind of thinking is not only outdated, but it's crippled, hamstrung, and people around the world are waking up to it. Humanity has been mostly happy to sit back and let a few powerful people run their nations and their lives, but if you look around they are not so happy anymore these days, if they ever really were. Freedom comes at a cost and that means each and every one of us taking an active role in helping the world run right. In the dream, I escorted her kindly back to her home, where she can fade away in peace until she is nothing more than a memory... while myself exhibiting the virtue of kindness toward a fellow human being who can offer me nothing in return and won't even remember the kindness once I am out of sight. This is what I hope to have more of in myself and my fellow human beings as we evolve toward that bright tomorrow. I know, deep in my heart, it's a tomorrow I will likely not live to see for myself, but I can cherish it for those who go on after me.

Thanks everyone for your insight. I thank Voort especially for taking time to give it a little thought... much obliged. This was one of those dreams that sticks with you a bit, and it helped process it to talk it out here.

ok I gotta throw my two cents in here .. no shoes,, is not having everything you need to get you where you need to go,, you have basically your gear except for that one thing,, it could mean you as an individual or knowledge you don't have yet.. information..to get you what you need to know to proceed further.. something lacking.. not necessarily skills but some little thing as basic as shoes.. maybe an oversight. like when the house is on fire and you jump out with no blanket to keep you warm and its the middle of winter .. the big flag,, to me its an old reminder of what used to be never surrender never retreat kinda thing maybe,, its size was definitely a you aint gonna forget this moment,, don't forget it..like the glory of what this country used to be back in a certain era maybe.. its still up on the pole but its seen better days
