Default Looks like ''shtf'' for many on a personal level due to power outages, heat

I keep reading about all the storms and power outages that much of the mid-atlantic and southeast are experiencing., my area included. This is when preppers are glad that they have some backup systems in place..Good luck to everyone!

I feel for everyone who is without power in this 100+ degree heat. I went only 1 1/2 day in this environment and I wondered how in the world did our forefathers cope with no electricity/air in these miserably hot summers? I only guess we have gotten too acclimated to controlled heating and air to appreciate exactly what they coped with on a routine basis. EMP threat to them? HA! Hardly. We are a soft civilization--and entitled to boot.

And to those that lost their houses in Colorado and New Mexico--I couldn't help but think how many guns and ammo went up along with the houses...

i've always wondered why those in the fire zones dont have their stuff packed up and ready to roll when fire season starts. i mean you always see these people on tv that only got out with the clothes on their back.

My AC went out on Friday, I broke down and bought a window unit until the central can get fixed (I rent, but apparently maintenance doesn't check messages over the weekend, even in 110 degree weather). It's enough to make exactly one room a tolerable temp. The rest of the apartment is a sauna.

The past few days it's been right at 100 degrees with a heat index of 105-110 here in Central AL. We have window units mounted in a couple of the windows on the house, but we use the central air instead. If that were to break, then we'd use the window units.

I suppose if there was a large power outage here I'd use the generator to power the fridge and one of the window units. That would at least keep the food from going bad and keep at least a couple of the rooms in the house at a tolerable temperature. If it was a legitimate SHTF situation like an EMP or something, the generator obviously wouldn't be viable or practical so I'd likely spend the really hot days in the basement where it's naturally cold because of its concrete walls and floors and due to the fact that it's underground.
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

Fire season last summer in central TX is what got my wife on board with bug out bags. Before that she thought I was being paranoid. Also, I'm using the loss of power out east to explain why we need to store food, water and fuel. Slowly she's coming around.

Looks like the shtf in South Jersey early Saturday morning. All over an unexpected , severe thunderstorm! Most of Cumberland & Atlantic counties expected to stay dark until Friday? All I hear outside is the hum of generators from across the lake (Our side got the power back late Sat. evening). Long lines to get gas, water, ice. I learned that enven when you prep, prep some more!

The nursing home where my wife's father is without air conditioning, and they are on generators for several days now. The local radio stations are off the air. Uprooted trees & snapped power poles litter the back roads. People are acting different (like vultures) Two you cousins (ages two & seven) got killed when a tree fell on their tent, while camping with their families, at a local state park. I've been volunteering at the local EOC with other ham radios people to distribute cases of bottled water & 50lb. bags of ice. My daughter, her husband & children, are camping out in our living room, because the power will be out on their side of the lake, where they live, until maybe Wednesday.

Those big fires don't always hit the same areas again and again. I've been in Oklahoma for 20 years and only had 1 tornado in my town and that was only happened a few months back. I've been wanting to build some sort of bunker for a while now, the wife is on board but refers to it as shelter. Tornado Shelter is a great cover for a bunker in these parts.

Sorry to hear about your losses. Keep your chin up. Sounds like you're doing great deeds. If your daughter, husband & children aren't preppers, they soon will (or at least should) be.
