there was a movie about how dragons came up out of the earth and devoured everything. the movie is set in the UK. lots of FALs in the pic. sorry no name but somone here may have seen it.

over the years there have been a series of books published with jerry pournelle's name prominent. named THERE WILL BE WAR, some of the stories are about the small village of barley cross in ireland. a british army sergeant deserts with a tank as civilization collapses and winds up in barley cross. the disaster was a disease that made men sterile. this sergeant is immune and becomes "lord of barley cross" and practices the ancient "right of the first night" with all new brides in the hope of fathering a new generation. the stories are simply fantastic reading but i do not know the author or if they were ever published separately from the THERE WILL BE WAR series of books.

When he left the bunker he found Ivan and Kelly waiting for him. Kelly was already sat on her bike leaned back against the storage cage with her arms folded. Ivan was stood by the entrance to the shelter putting some finishing touches to his camouflage face paint in the last of the daylight.

They waited until 30 minutes after sunset to let their eyes fully acclimatise. Although they has night vision goggles with them they did not want rely too heavily on them as they only had a finite supply of batteries. With a 3/4 moon and a clear sky they would be fine as long as they kept the speed down. Peter’s plan called for them to make use of the roads closest to the bunker to see if there was any sign of life in the buildings and houses closest to them.

    “Ready?”
“Yes boss” replied Kelly, while Ivan merely nodded.
    “Ok. Peter radio check over”
    “Kelly ok over”
    “Ivan ok over”
    “Jim ok over”
    “Peter ok out”

They now had comms between each other and with Jim sat in the operations room. The three on the mission had commercially bought radios with earpieces and throat mikes. The large radio in the operations room had its antenna hidden inside a flagpole.

Peter mounted his bike and attached his shotgun to the clips on his handlebars. He pulled on his gloves, helmet and goggles and settled into his seat. Raising a finger into the air at shoulder level he spun it around clockwise to tell the others to start up. Looking at each of the other riders Peter gave and received a thumbs up that they were ready. Peter nodded to Ivan who nodded back and pulled away out of the yard and on to the road beyond. Peter made a quick radio call to Jim to tell him know they were leaving, then he and Kelly pulled out in the same direction as Ivan hanging back to the point of visibility.

They drove for approximately 10 minutes before they reached their first checkpoint. Once Peter had checked in with Jim on the radio they pulled off the road and up a farm track. The fields that would ordinarily planted with oilseed rape at this time of the year were covered in waist high grass liberally strewn with wild flowers. Peter, who was never a fan of the nearly fluorescent yellow plants, thought to himself that perhaps the changes to the land were not all bad. 100 metres up the track they sighted a small copse. Peter signalled Ivan to go ahead and check it was clear while he and Kelly hung back keeping an over watch of the surrounding terrain.

Ivan eased his bike backwards off of the track and into the wood line. Once inside he turned off his engine and sat listening to the sounds of the wood. After a few minutes, confident that the only sounds he could hear were natural, he dismounted his bike. Unclipping his shotgun and slinging it across his body he quickly covered his bike with the camouflage net and stepped out to the path to wave the others in.

Peter and Kelly quickly pulled up and backed their bikes into the wood line next to Ivan’s. They secured their weapons and draped the cammo nets over the bikes just like Ivan did. Peter took out his map and using a red filtered torch set a bearing on his compass, remembering to take into account the magnetic variation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_declination). Leaving Kelly to guard the bikes Peter and Ivan set off to recce their first location.

Peter had chosen the farm compound that was their nearest neighbour as the target for their first recce patrol. He felt that this should be their first target as it was right on their doorstep and could potentially hold some supplies they could use. He also thought that if any other survivors were living there, there wouldn’t be too many of them.

The farm was sat in dead ground from where they had parked the bikes so they mad good time until they reached just below the crest of the higher ground. They unslung their day sacks and pulled out a Mitznefet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitznef...aeli_military)) which they pulled onto their helmets. Slowly and carefully they crawled up to the ridge and, careful not to skyline themselves they got into a position to observe the farm compound. They sat watching for several minutes looking for any movement, light, smoke, sound or any other signs of life. While Peter scanned with a set of binoculars Ivan used a thermal scope to check for any heat sources (http://www.flir.com/cs/emea/en/view/?id=52753). After several minutes of observation they backed off and approached the compound from another angle where they again sat and observed. They repeated this process until they had observed 360 degrees around the target.

Having decided there was no sign of life Peter decided that the site warranted a close target recce or CTR as it was better known. He chose a line of approach that was towards the end of the building which had no windows. This allowed them to get as close to the building as they could without being in direct sight of any of the windows. Given that the thermal sight had shown no sign of any heat sources in any of the out buildings they were going to concentrate initially on the house. They made a slow, silent circuit of the building looking for any signs of life they might have missed from their stand-off observation. When they got to the front of the building Ivan, who was walking point raised a hand in warning. Immediately crouching down he pointed towards the front door which was slightly ajar. Fronted as it was by a small porch they had not been able to see this from their previous observation point.

Peter’s heart started to beat faster as he considered the implications. Had the inhabitants left and not closed it behind them? He decided it was unlikely. Had someone else been here, gained entry and searched the place? More likely. Or was there someone waiting in ambush inside the door? Less likely but was the risk worth it? Tapping Ivan on the shoulder Peter jerked his head back the way they had come and indicated he wanted to stand off and consider his options. Once they were back in cover he leaned into Ivan’s ear so he could whisper.

“What do you think mate? Someone in there?”

The big Ukrainian shrugged and scratched his nose while he thought.

“Could be booby-trapped like in Afghanistan”

Peter grimaced, he well remembered the Taliban’s habit of placing explosive devices in doorways set to go off when someone opened the door or came through it. In the UK it was unlikely that it would be an explosive but there was no reason a shotgun couldn’t have been rigged to go off when the door was opened. He took a deep breath and outlined his plan.

“Right, first thing throw a rock at it to see if we can get a twitch that way. Might even set something off it’s there. If that draws a blank load a solid shot and shoot at the door, that sould blow it wide open and definitely set of anything if there’s a booby trap. We’ll reassess after that.”

Ivan nodded and groped around on the ground by his feet until he found a rock that met with his satisfaction. Peter made a mental note to bring out a cricket ball on trips like this in future. It could be thrown with more accuracy and, as it was pretty much solid, would be more effective for what they were trying. Once Ivan signalled he was ready Peter made a quick radio call to let Jim and Kelly know what they were doing. With that done he nodded to Ivan to proceed.

Ivan carefully lay his shotgun down on the ground and took his aim. With a quiet grunt he let the stone fly as hard as he could. Despite himself Peter jumped at the noise when it hit the door, moving it slightly. Once he had let go of the stone Ivan had hit the ground so that he was lying on his stomach, making himself as small as possible. They waited for a response. Nothing. Peter decided that in a way that was even worse. Starting to sweat now, he tapped Ivan on the shoulder and pointed to the shotgun. Ivan nodded and picked it up.

Kneeling up and taking careful aim Ivan took a deep breath, held it and squeezed the trigger. If the sound of the stone hitting the door had made Peter jump, the shotgun going off made him nearly leap out of his skin. A flock of pigeons burst out of a nearby tree, where they had been roosting and away into the night. Ivan racked another shell into the chamber and immediately rolled to his left to change his position in case anyone decided to shoot at the muzzle flash.

Still there was nothing. Peter took a deep breath, stood up and beckoned Ivan to follow him. Quickly they approached the door with their weapons in their shoulder ready for any trouble. They both stood to the left of the door, poised. Ivan nodded his head to show he was ready and Peter tapped him on the shoulder to give him the go. They quickly entered the door, switching on the powerful torches mounted on the end of their weapons. Each taking a side of the corridor they proceeded to silently clear room to room through the bottom floor of the house. This done they swiftly moved to do the same with the upstairs. Empty.

Peter breathed deeply and sighed in relief. A closer look at the front door showed that it had been forced open. The cupboards on the kitchen were all open and those that had contained any foodstuffs were bare. All through the rest of the house was the same. The looting had been carried out in a considered fashion. A several clothes hangers lying atop a pile of clothes showed that the looters were selective about what they took. The absence of any winter clothes told Peter that this had probably taken place during the first winter after the fall.
