Looking at batteries and solar cells for alternative power to suplement the generators. Hope to put in an order tomorrow for 2 six volt golf cart batteries that are optimized for alternative power use, the Trojan T-105 SE model. I'll be getting the 3-pannel solar unit from Harbor Freight and a decent charge controller. That's not a lot of capacity but it should be enough to run/recharge small lights and radios, just enough to keep us lit and listening. We should also be able to power cell phones, walkie-talkies and a shortwave receiver. Having coms is going to be huge and to be able to do it without fuel and without the noise of the generators is a great thing.
We'll still need the generators for things like running the clothes washer. I don't intend to be doing laundry by hand unless there's just no alternative. Within a few weeks I hope to have a good supply of spare parts (common maintenance and repair stuff) for the generators. (Honda EU-2000i, matched pair)
Also I expect to be placing an order for mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. One of our main prep inadequacies right now is dog food. You can only store it so long before it becomes rancid due to fat content in the food and oxygen in the air combining. I believe that sealing in mylar bags with oxygen will prevent that spoilage. We'll have to keep the sealed mylar bags in metal trash cans to avoid predation by mice/rats. I've had prep food in plastic tubs eaten by rodents before. It's not pretty.
I need more bullets... 9mm and .40 - got a source for those, just need the time and money to git 'r dun. Powder, primer and brass I'm flying high with right now, woo hoo.
We just paid off a bunch of debts/bills and hopefully that frees up some monthly expense for the preps we need.
