I was thinking about possibly doing a BOB campout with my fiancee (or bugout dead weight/liability as I call her) I am going to start at home for a bug-in... Maybe this fall, gonna turn off the power at the breaker outside and voila! survival situation! I am pretty good at the whole preparedeness thing, but the fiancee thinks "camping" is the ramada inn with no hair dryer. So... In order to make sure she knows what to do at least temporarily at home alone while I take the Nike Express home from work or try to get home on the surface streets until I run out of gas in the truck. We have HUGE reserves for bug-in usage (not practical for bugout without a BOV due to weight/packaging) (It makes me happy when she comes home with a bag full of canned chili, beans, and spam and says " Look what I found at the 99 cent store!) I just think making sure my partner is able to cook on a fire in the fireplace, secure the house, and stay warm as well as prepare the gear for evac, or extended shelter in place.

I was wrong when I called her dead weight/bug-out liability she wants a bunker when we get our new house! Sorry guys, she doesn't have a sister

Taken care of.

The last BOB drill I did was in winter. I packed my gear in a sled and towed it with my snow mobile. I rode my snow mobile as far as it could go in the deep snow then snowshoed about a mile to a very secluded camp and camped for 10 days. I had to make a couple of trips to pack in all the gear. My time was used in cutting firewood, building a shelter and snarring snowshoe hare. Downtime was spent on catching up on reading. All in all it was cozy and peaceful.

Welcome to the forum, AK474U. I see you've already got a good start. I've thought about the BOB campout, but the wife and kids are never gonna go for it, especially the kids. My wife does like to camp, though, and electricity and/or running water aren't required. She can cook over a fire and work around the house by lantern.

I've done it with my family a couple of time, but I wouldn't exactly call them successes. :) I have three kids, and they thought it was fun at first, but soon the reality of no tv, games other than gameboys, computers, gnats, mosquitos ticks, briars, etc, and AC soon began to take their toll on their happiness quotient. They did good, but I think it's probably a last resort scenario for our crew.

It never hurts to try things out though before you really need to. You'll find you've neglected to pack several items once your away from the house and the local Wally Mart. :)

What? no wally world in the post apocolypse America? I'm out! I'll just have to lay down and die... Where would I get my SOF magazines? Where would I get food? Ok, kidding.

By the way, does Wally still sell guns where you are? Not here anymore, I'm sorta boycotting them when I can. I mean I know that Al Qaeda buys their guns at Wally World, so I mean who can blame them? Sam must be rolling over in his grave.

the local Wally World is still selling them, but they're not restocking them once their inventory is depleted. I hate the fact that they did away with their layaway plan also, no more buying on time for me. :crybaby:

Got one in the works or at least the planning stages. Getting to be nice weather here in Kentucky. All of those crazy 110 degree days are gone. Just starting to get cool at night and great in the day. Fall is coming and the leaves are changing way to early because of the drought. Have to be real careful with the camp fire.

I've done it. Actually very relaxing I thought. I hiked a couple miles. Built a camp, shot a couple squirrels. Ate supper and slept next to the fire with an AR.

Several of us are discussing doing it in the next 8 weeks or so. Basically, we're looking at a 4-man group going into the woods/natl forest around the place we're moving to and identifying/labeling landmarks for map references and maybe do some light camping. Prolly spend ~48 hrs in the brush, all told. Dunno if it'll be BOB or patrol-gear based camping, tho.

Went out today and selected a site nearby to take my girlfriend too. Nothing major but I want to get her into the idea of staying out in the boonies for a few days at a time. It is a side of my life that she knows of but really isn't a part of.

Spent a few hours gathering wood, making a fire-pit and a cat hole with a log seat cause I want her to be able to enjoy herself.

In the long run my plans for the spring and summer is to find a suitable location to build a cabin and start that project and stay at the site for a week at a time. I have been trying to get an idea on the amount of supplies such as fresh food, water, tools and such that I will need. I will in the end have to ruck everything in that I need so Caching is going to be the plan.

I regularly get in practice staying a whole weekend in the bunker 4 times a year ... it's fun.

viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2387 (http://www.whenshtf.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2387)

I crank up the small thrify diesel generator (power & heat from engine), turn on the CD stereo, spruce the place up and cook some freeze-dried or an MRE or some of the nitrogen packed that's due for rotation, watch my Jericho tapes, or jam with the hams (gotta fix my yagi antenna and the satellite dish on top pretty soon, winter has taken its toll)... or just jabber with other 'vivors in the woods up here on the CB and sideband ch16.

I ran power, coax and phone wire underground to the house and water line from the well when I built it to have cable TV and computer internet, and can supply the house with power in an emergency. The bunker is 100 yards out in the field between the big barbwired gardens so I can guard them from the turret on top with my Steyr Aug bullpup. I have some sillouette targets at the edge of the woods to simulate intruders, and even plink a little in the dark with my starlite scope for "practice".

Good feeling knowing you are fully prepared and armed for what's coming shortly.

We did it last weekend. Friday night after work I pulled the kit from the storage room and threw it in the truck. However ... I did supplement the BOB with an ice chest and food plus toys and such for the boys to have fun.
It rained like hell starting 4am Saturday. Turned to a drizzle until about noon then a great weekend after that. All went well. We could have stayed dry in the tent but broke out the airsoft guns and the boys (9 & 10 year olds) and I played in the rain. We could have made it on the BOB food rations but I didn't feel the need to do that.
The next BOB camp out will be a Bug Out Motorhome trip to Georgia. :)

I have done it a couple of times. You really learn from experience camping out using your BOB. I do cheat however, because I try to go to places that has a good water supply and to fish. I have caught rabbits and squirrels using my conibear traps and snare wire. I do very little hunting because I don't want anyone to know I am around the area, so no shooting unless it's a last resort. If I go in warm weather I do take a backpackers tent because of the snakes and ticks, but I usually also build a brush shelter too. I use a small fire to cook over and have taught my wife to cook over an open fire. I do dig a small hole to build the fire in then when I leave I cover it over with dirt and try to leave the place as if no one has been there.
AK, what you might want to consider is when you start camping with your GF, go to a public campground at first to get her used to the idea of camping out. Most of them have bathrooms and she might accept the idea a little better. Then gradually camp in a more primitive style and that way she will slowly get used to the idea of camping out. Also, one thing I might suggest you to get is a solar shower. They are inexpensive and easy to use out in the woods. I have one in my BOB and it does wonders as a moral booster when the women can take a hot shower. Works wonders for thier attitude!!!!!

Hello all

Ron L here = SERESURPLUS

I have had to use the BOB a few times, when we were out on an extended Field Trip! It was started out to be setting up tree stands,m turned into a Hike and Looking for a lost child! Found out a few things!

1. Batteries, For Radios and the Flashlights and such, You never have enough?

2. Maps and Topo's, What a time to find out that most of your fellows can't read a map, or use a compass? LOL Time to train up more NOW!

3. Guns and Ammo, Yes Yes, But they get heavy? Found out how many guys had no slings or coudn't carry that thing for a day or so? Poor Equiptment showed itself each chance it could!

4. Animals, found out what I pretty much knew, Food Water and a place at your feet, they were the least of our problems!

5. Children, when properly let loose, will find ways to amuse themselves? All that Video Game crap goes out the window when they can look for deer and bear tracks? Plus, it was refreshing to see them help look for the lost child and really seem to care?

6. It's easy to find the bad in folks, times ahead will accentuate that fact, but a weekend like this one, showed the good in folks and how everyone Loves thier children and wanted to help find this lost one?

7. Police and Local "Authorities" proved to be as useless helping find this Child, than they would be after TSHTF! LOL, No real suprise there!

8. 4 Wheelers, Chain Saws and Large caliber Rifles, should be left to those that know how to use them, or folks need to admit they don't know how? That could have saved a few trips to the local hospital?

All in all, I discovered a few things, Dam, I've gotten Older? I don't have the wind or the Ability to stay out as I could? I have to learn to pace myself and learn that what worked when I was younger, won't work now, without a lot of changes? All this sort of thing, is and was a good learning experience!

I'm going to my buddies property near Canada border. Its near boundry waters. He has a large home on a 100 acres. I'm taking my motorhome and boat but we will be setting up tents and testing our skills with our teenage sons. The best thing is were going to be doing a lot of target shooting and zeroing in our weapons.I have food that I will be bring that I carry in my bugout bags. We will be cooking on a open fire ever night. We won't be using all the nice assessories I have in the motorhome.I have camping gear that I have used before having a motorhome. My buddies are ex rangers so this will be a good test. Were going to use our GPS and program the whole trip up there. Fishing is alway great up there so we will be eating good. I want to try going up there in winter and pratice our skills hunting and ice fishing. I never hunted using snares, and I want to see if I can do it. Squirel and rabbit hunting sounds fun with a 22 rifle.I would like to try fishing with out using our normal gear. I went to Canada for two weeks and we ran out of food after 3 days. we had plenty of oil, flour and potatoes. We ate fish every night and for beakfast. We did very well. I was attack by a huge brown bear that had cubs. I had to jump off a cliff to evade the attack. This bear just stood at the edge of the cliff looking down at me as I bounced down the mountain on my head. This time I'm carrying my 45 just in case.I was told there was only black bears around there, but I swear this bear looked like a Grizzly to me. Everyone be safe out there.

i just came back from camping. We fished for a few hours. We caught 5 large mouth bass over 4 pounds a piece. I lost a huge walleye over 28 inches and we caught over 10 that were under 18 inches. We let them all go. We cook all our food on a open fire pit.The food came out great as alway. The state parks raised all there camping fees !

I just came back two weeks ago from a week in Ocala National Forest. Got home from work and told my wife we should go camping. Grabbed the BOB and we were ready in 10 minutes. We had no prob living out of the BOB and I needed to replace/replenish anyway for hurricane season. I have got two kids under 7 and it is possible for anyone to be prepped and ready to go on a moments notice. It also helps that my older son and I bagged a nice boar that we feasted on for 3 days. God Bless and Nobama!
