I built a manual piston water pump today. It is a fairly high volume / low pressure pump capable of about 20-25 psi, so it can elevate water to about 40-50 feet. If two men power it, it could probably pump up to 80-100 feet vertically. It pumps 1 gallon per stroke. I plan to use it to elevate water from a cistern into a holding tank up the hill from my bug-out house. That way I'll have enough pressure to gravity feed some basic plumbing. I also plan to use this design to pump water from a creek into a tank to water the garden with.
The emphasis here was to be independent of electricity or fuel as a power source. I also thought about getting a donkey and a cart to move water up the hill. :)

Keep in mind that this is really just my rough draft of this pump. I wanted to make sure the concept was sound. Now that I know it works, I will tweak it into a more finished final product.
By the way, if I get tired I will rest, drink some beer, take a nap, and then pump some more. What's the hurry, right?

Cool to both items, the pump and the windmill.
