I found a "deuce and a half" in my local paper. 1976 M35A2. They say it runs good. $2500.
Is this a deal?
It weighs 13,000 pounds empty and is 8 ft wide. Get 10mpg. I think I'd be better off with a much smaller diesel car.

I guess it depends on how much $$ you want to spend on stockpiling fuel in 5 gal cans. Once the SHTF, good luck feeding that beast...once the gas tank runs dry its a 13,000 lb paperweight with all your stuff in the back. I keep flashing back to the 5 mile long lines for gas after Katrina...

Great truck but the fuel mileage would limit your range. Better of with something smaller like a Toyota truck or a jeep Cherokee. Now if you could convert that truck to steam  OK all you mechanical inclined help me out here and tell me if you think this would work. I have heard of steam turbines (read this) http://library.thinkquest.org/C006011/e ... e.php3?v=2 (http://library.thinkquest.org/C006011/english/sites/dampfturbine.php3?v=2) that are very fuel efficient some as low as 2 lbs of propane and one gallon of water a day for a generator. My idea id to couple a steam turbine to a hydrostactic transmission then to that trucks transmission, that way you keep your gears. The reason I would have the hydrostatic trans is because turbines have a lag to start and stop, so if you couple it to the hydrostatic trans you can then control the speed while the turbine stays up to speed. what do you all think? Found this to. http://quasiturbine.promci.qc.ca/QTVapeur.html last one goodole Tesla http://freeenergynews.com/Directory/Dev ... index.html (http://freeenergynews.com/Directory/Devices/TeslaTurbine/index.html)

Have you ever heard of the term "subtle"? A deuce and a half, while pretty cool, is not subtle. I think it would attract way too much of the wrong kind of attention.

if it's a multi-fuel diesel it will burn used motor oil, raw veggie oil, tranny fluid, hydraulic oil, gasoline, etc. consider how many oil change places and fast food places there are around you...they're all potential fuel sources.

I think I'll get one of these instead.

If you read that article, it's one of the most reliable and long-lasting cars on earth and it is very simple to work on. They've got one in a museum that went almost 3 million miles.
I found one for 1500 bucks, 1979. I can probably Jew them down to 1000 or so.

Yes the are very good cars to but they sit low (not good if you have to go off road) and parts are getting hard to find for the older ones, but they will burn veggy oil! :)

I like the UniMog/Swiss vehicles.
I believe they have 4 cyl mercedes diesels.
Wonder what kind of mileage they get?
