View Full Version : The "John Doe" law

I've been listening to the recent discussions of the "John Doe" law. Basically it exempts a person from prosecution if they report suspicious activity of someone who might be a terrrorist. On the surface, this seems like a good law. Afterall, in the "war on terror" we want average citizens to remain diligent and on the watch. It would protect someone from lawsuits like those filed by the "flying imams" (fascist swine). After some thought on the subject, I think it could be a step in the wrong direction. I think that the day will come when average citizens will be snitching on one another in order to stay in good graces with the police state and also because the sheeple will be brainwashed into believing that those who fight for the constitution, freedom, and survival are terrorists themselves. When the antichrist (Hillary Clinton) gets elected, it's only a matter of time before guns are outlawed and our neighbors will be all too eager to turn us in. I've considered that if martial law is enacted, law enforcement and military will be asked to limit inter-city travel. This might lead to me traveling on foot, at night to my bug-out location. Civilians will be told that it is all for their own safety and to report anyone they see out after curfew. Anyone out after curfew are most likely terrorists, afterall, and they deserve to be sent to the prison camps.
See what I'm getting at? A culture is being created where average cititzens will be all too eager to report one another. The threat of terrorism is playing neatly into the hands of the those bent on world domination.

It will happen. An easy way to get back at your neighbors when they have a loud party, their dog craps on your lawn, etc., etc. The world is full of self-righteous nosy people who live who live bland lives and desperately need to belong to something and crave noteriety.
Hey it happened to the Germans in the 30's, why not here.

Time to re-read Orwell's 1984. He might have been off a few years, but Thought Crime is not that far away.

One more reason to move out to the country, where the neighbors are far away, and are probably like-minded.

or move to areas of nevada where neighbors are nonexistant. i'm currently looking to buy property where the nearest neighbor is more than 50 miles away.

This and your reaction to it was very similar to my reaction to a pressing request to sign up for the [url=http://www.highwaywatch.com/eweb/StartPage.aspx?site=hwwhome:4e485]"Highway Watch"[/url:4e485] program.
The program wants "ordinary folks" to keep watch for "suspicious activity."
The training materials tell you you will be "special" because you are a Highway Watch member...but some of the things that they train you to be observant about could (in a far-fetched way) be indicators of possible terrorist activities...but then they could just be someone broken down on the side of the road...some of the stuff seemed very intrusive to me.
Being a pretty observant person...I notice stuff that I've found some of my contemporaries do not...but this program will (and has been I assume) turn a bunch of truck drivers into the nosy neighbor on the highway...and to me...that's not necessarily a GOOD thing....
Soon...and I see this as the precursor to it...we will have what was inadvertently predicted in "1984".

There are reasons I'm looking into being able to build a semi-auto carbine from everyday materials.

While I think you have a good point, the fact is that any laws can be subverted by a tyrant.
"How strangely the tools of the tyrant pervert the plain Meaning of the word," wrote Samuel Adams.
Just look at how liberals have tried to turn the second amendment into a "collective right."
I think the law is a good one; properly used it will protect honest people who report suspicious behaviour.
If a tyrant does rise to power, we will have far more egregious concerns than just the perversion of this law.

First they came for the Communists,
- but I was not a communist so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists,
- but I was neither, so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Jews,
- but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.
