Seems to be a very comprehensive and well thought out list. A couple of comments.

There is a lot of stuff that is quite heavy. I'm assuming that for that gear it will be used in a bug in situation. Have you considered splitting the list to Bug In/Bug Out Lists/Containers to make moves & decisions quicker?

I have mixed feelings with field gear in BO situations. I think it might draw unwanted attention. Becoming one with the Sheeple may be a more workable approach. If you're Bugging In, then field gear, webbing, tactical vests may work, but will still draw attention.

Consider a blast match or flint/steel as well as some waterproof fire starters

A portable battery/vehicle jumper/air compressor, might be useful. Think about a small generator that is easily transportable as well. Honda 2000EU are REALLY Quiet and can be hooked up in series for additional power.

As far as tactical clothing goes, I would just get some carpenter pants. They have alot more pockets, and are just as durable as bdu's. A set of boots would probly be helpful as well. The tactical vest might be a step too far, because like Miami said, it may compromise your identity. You may be mistaken for an enemy by the regular police, military, ect. Or you may be mistaken by the enemy for being a cop, soldier, ect. Its situational though like Miami said. In a Bug-In situation, the skys the limit, and the more of something you have the better off you are. In a bug out situation, the same rule applies, but your limited by mobility. I agree that you should have 2 seperate list, as well as a game plan for bugging in/bugging out.

Food, water, and more TP.

Also more lighting. A couple flashlights per person (one bright/tough one that works well outdoors and one long running less bright) is good, but I would also want a lantern or two and a bunch of candles.

3 or 4 good knives and a can opener. Amazing how many people forget they have to open the cans. Also water sanitizing tablets. Don't forget a tube of super glue as you can use it close small wounds as well. I try to stick to items that will do double duty. Only reason to bring the wife! She can cook and she can ........ nevermind!

If you're gonna have a chainsaw, don't for get the bar oil, spare plugs, spare filters, and maybe an extra scrench. Anothe tool that comes in handy is a draw knife.

Medical- neosporyn.

Magnesium bar with flint bar attached for fire starting. Also start saving your dryer lint and put in a ziplock bag. It's awesome for starting fires in wet weather. Hurricane candles are great and cheap at dollar stores. Light your candle and use it to start fires, better than using numerous matches.

Multi person tents are better in cold climates, share warmth with partner. Need some sort of ground padding mat or two . A cold ground will suck the heat right out of you faster than you can say BRRRRRR. Plus sleeping directly on the ground will make you sore in the morning.


If you are buggin out by vehicle, always keep your vehicle at no less than 3/4 full and store/haul as much gas as possible.

Don't forget a good pocket knife and sheath knife and if you are movin'
compasses and maps(road & topo).

Barter items to think about ( stuff you can do without). No ammo!

My list is a bug in list as we ( 5 families ) who are going to bug in at my location on . 55 rural acres. It is isolated and defendable. We have designed choke point entrances. If the SHTF any intruders will have to be on foot. For the record we are not a bunch of nut cases we are people who see or have seen how Fast things can turn to crap in a hurry. Our intention is to be as self sufficient as possible. Most of the families are emergency service related, police, paramedics, firefighters ect

I like the posts that are coming and if we keep it going all of us will be better prepared

I used to warn people about what's going to happen, they just laugh. They mostly care about money and entertainment and I don't think that my husband and I could find five people in the whole state. I like how you planned everything out and I hope I can learn from you. :)

Hopefully this thread will help through the posts . I would start looking for a place to retreat, it is going to get bad and I hope you can get out of the urban area. I feel it would be a nightmare to stay. I will help any way I can.

What I like about you list is there are things other than guns and ammo.

We are just as likely to need a chainsaw to cut down a tree as we are an SKS. And if the power is out for any lenght of time, all the hand tools will come in handy.

The most important thing is that you have taken the first step, that is THINKING about what to do. Yes, you may be restricted in what you can do in the city you are living in, so now start to develop a contingency plan on what you can do to counter those restrictions. Can you get to an area that doesn't have them and cache your weapons? Friends/Family? Don't despair, even in the city, there are those who have a similar mindset. Talk to people. Some will think you kooky, but so what?! Also check out some of the other survival and gun boards. Make some online acquaintences in your area. Good Planning and Keeping a Cool Head go a long way.

Another good item for the first aid kit would be tampons. Aside from thier usual usage, they are great for bullet wounds, and would not have to be taped to remain in place.

For repairs and shoring up in case of hurricanes

Roof repair tar (I don't know the right name) you can get it in 1 gal or 5 gal cans for patching leaks.

Tarps, tarps, and more tarps.

Fence posts and fencing wire (American wire in addition to barbed wire) -- in case you plan on livestock. You can also use it to channell traffic into fields of fire.

I see you haven't included any form of classical projectile i.e. bow and arrow. What use is a gun if there's no ammo? With a bow/crossbow, you can retrieve the fired ammo.

I used to shoot a bow. I hear all this stuff about retrieving your ammo (arrows). Try to find an arrow in the woods after you've missed your shot. See how many arrows are damaged by missed shots, many beyond repair. A 50lb. bow can send an arrow clean through a deer, allowing it to still be lost or damaged by hitting trees, etc. Refletching arrows is a skill. Straightening them is an art. Shooting a bow accurately over widely varied distances is almost an art. While I am not saying the bow doesn't have a place, it is not nearly so simple as it appears.

Arrows that you make in the field are not going to be as accurate nor as strong as factory made arows. Also, most won't handle the power and speeds of compound bows, not to mention crossbows. Recurves are even harder to master from a shooter standpoint.

Sure they take some practice but they're cheap and ammo (rocks) is unlimited depending on where you are.

My local dollar store sells slingshots that are worth more than that dollar.

A sling can be made from a piece of leather/canvas and shoelaces.

That's kinds what I was thinking, this looks like a 6-month list or so. Living here in the upper midwest, the weather would be more of a concern. Having a way to heat your home throughout the winter would be essential, the preferable method being wood heat. Definitely a good starting point though.

I agree on that. I've been considering making a good shepherd's sling for a while. i also like throwing spears and other antiquated weapons and tactics. I suppose I've been playing a little too much Rome total war....:rifles:



In regards to the original post. I think I would bump up the supply of .22lr ammo to 5 or 10 thousand, as it is really cheap. And I would include other size shots of shotgun. Perhaps some 4 shot for larger birds and small game. Also, battle rifles may not be best for hunting large game and a separate big game rifle may be good to have.
