If you are lucky enough to have a GPS you should be able to hook it to your PC and look at topo maps there. I also believe you can print them out.

That is an example of the small unexciting items that are seldom thought about but can be VERY usefull. :salut:
Most outdoor stores have them of local areas. I was just at REI in Portland the other day and stood looking at various maps going, you know, once I've chosen my Bug Out location, I should definitely get a topo map for that area, and have it in my pack. Just so that I know the lay of the land for a 100 miles around me.
Just don't forget to obtain the skills to read the map, and get yourself a solid compass, and practice, practice, practice.

Don't know if this helps but http://terraserver-usa.com/
It's Microsoft's Terra Server in conjunction with USGS to provide both orthophotography and topographic maps.
Heres an online site for just topos..
http://www.topozone.com
I have a free program that I use almost exclusively for my area.
Go to http://www.jdmcox.com and DL the USAPhotoMap program.
To get started you will need to know your latitude & longitude.. put these in the goto field & enter.. once there hit "F" to fill the blanks.. if it fills with photos.. no prob.. hit "T" then fill again and you'll have a seamless topo map.
I keep the whole thing on a 1 gig USB drive & have about half of the county in maps & photos.. You can interface with GPS as well..
The help screen will tell ya all ya need to know.
As far as purchasing the paper maps.. check any decent sporting goods store.. True-Value, Ace hardware Eastern Mountain Sports are some of the outlets here in Maine...YMMV
Best luck.

Nice. Land navigation shouldn't be an issue. lol
I've encountered a lot of people in the past that pick up a topo map in order to "be prepared", and you ask them to point out an elevation, or navigate a location based on the map, and they just kind of look at you because for some reason they think it works like a road map.
I've had a lot of luck in Outdoor stores, but those are just localized maps. They're not wherever sorts of things. I second TOPOZONE, I use it for classroom stuff for my Ecology class. I do what I can to teach them how to use topos and GPS stuff, we also cover edible and medicinal plants, and other stuff. I try to work in as much survival as I can. lol.

There's a map company (ADC I think), that prints them state by state. You used to be able to buy them through Sportsmans Guide. I think I have seen them at Wal-Mart. I have my state and adjoining states, as well as a few USGS Topo maps of some of my area I got from a friend in a previous group.

I mean hell besides navigation, they show all information that will mean life of death. What sources, cliffs, swamps. Populated Areas.

USGS.gov is the way to go 6 dollars apiece and got them in under a week.
Agreed ZH.. I put a mag N-S line on mine so I don't have to mess with declination in the field then 3-4 coats of Scotchguard on both sides. Makes 'em last a lot longer. Anyone here found a better waterproofing??

Well if you are talking single range/township (non foldable) topo maps or close to it, go to Kinko's or similar establishment and get your maps sealed in the laminating machine. It does not cost much.
BTW Range/ township maps has nothing to do with pasture land or or towns. If anyone needs up to speed I will explain it for all.

Spot on. The USGS is the place to pick up topo maps. I have all mine with UTM lines added, and used laminating sheets to waterproof and improve durability on mine. I keep them in a 4 inch piece of PVC with caps on both ends. Waterproof, kid proof, and can even ride in the back of my truck for months with no damage to the maps.

I carry a map-book when I'm out on a job. The one I use is the "-State- Atlas and Gazetteer" published by DeLorme. I pick up USGS maps for specific sites I need, from a local office-supply company.

ZH, I know this a an old thread and such but I've got a copy of TOPO Ky by Delorme. That way, you can print out your own maps of any area in Ky you like. Here's the paper I use. PM me if you'd like a copy.

I got them from USGS and bought a Sealline case for them. Funny thing is they split my lil one horse town into two so I had to get two maps.
