Ok, for us florida folk...

A Catastrophic hurricane (Like KATRINA catastrophic), originally predicted to turn north and completely miss Florida, if now barreling down on your area, with less then a days wait till it strikes. You dont have enough time to flee far enough to make a difference. You havent fully stocked up for this storm because it was supposed to be a miss. What do you do?

Well, it really doesn't apply to any of us here because we're members of whenshtf.com and we're always prepared, just like the Boy Scouts. :)

A full day isn't long enough to be able to drive away from this storm?

I would like to think that most Floridians are smart enough (given the 2004 season) to not be that apathetic...but you never know.

IF I haven't stocked up before storm season is upon us...it is because I haven't had the extra cash anyway...so I'm just screwed... :bang:

Time to start researching the best recipes for dog, cat and horse... ;) (and I have a few fleshy neighbors too...if it comes down to that... ;)

But I doubt it would...since I have a couple neighbors with cattle....and frankly speaking...I believe I am better armed than they... :P

Speaking of which...time to get that generator of mine running...

Actually we had that problem here where I live a few years ago. Even though I do live in the mountains we got hit by 2 'canes within a 2 week period. No water, electricty, the computers didnt work in the stores and it was a mess. However, I didn't have any problems because guess who was prepared. I did run to the store a day before the first one hit and got some more preps just to see how it would be. All the stores were packed with people and I joined in. The people were running around like sheep (lol) and just going nuts. I had a very hard time keeping from laughing out loud at them. But to answer your question I would go back to the store just to "top off my preps". If it was a mad house like before I just would go to the Dollar Store to get things like Ramen noodles, bottled water, etc.

I will need to tell you what happened with me and one of my neighbors up the street after the 2nd hurricane hit but that is another story.

Hmmm, now where have I heard that one before?.........Oh yeah, ANDREW!

Well, if I'm not fully stocked, then the drill is split my resources to go to different stores to try and get as much of the essentials as possible, including non-pershible food, fuel, water, TP, Chlorine, Contractor Bags, etc. Next is to batten down the hatches and prep the property as best we can with shutters, cutting down avocados, coconuts other potential missles, shutter the house and batten down and wait. I'm not getting on the road to try and outrun the storm, especially if everyone else is evacuating, just to get caught in the traffic jam of the century, out in the open when the storm hits.

Shelter in place and come out afterwards to do a BDA, start the generator (assuming you have one) and pickup from there.

IF it were to hit my area...I wouldn't try and head north. I'd head south. It's the least probable place other folks would head. I'm far enough north where if I could even make it 150 miles south...I have a VERY good shot at being out of real danger. I'd stock up while down there and once it was through I'd head home and clean up.

If I had no other alternative than to head north...I would probably try and wait till the last second...I do think the roads would be less traveled at that time as the mass panic will have already progressed far enough away. Hell even if I only had an hour before the storm hit I could at least make it damn near to the state line...then just drive through the outskirts of the storm.

Ever tried to leave right before a storm? When the 2 hurricanes hit us back to back, there were people still on I95 as the first one was making landfall. Roads get EXTREMELY clogged when people are evacuating.

Hey Joey welcome aboard.

Molivo, I agree splitting is not a viable contingency. I saw the same thing at my dad's place in Stuart.

See..I DID bug out for Charley...I stayed just ahead of the storm (2-3 hours). Travelled north from where I live to Palatka...stopped for about an hour and monitored the storm...when it turned and headed "sort of" that way....we headed west to Gainesville.

Missed the bulk of the storm...got home around midnight after Charley went offshore...we still had some wind and rain...but no damage and the power never even got knocked out...which is ironic because we've had the power go off for hours on a bright, sunny day...for no apparent reason...

That said...I live next to the Ocala National Forest...and frankly speaking...until I headed home from Gainesville...we never saw a major roadway! ;) (so...no traffic jams)

In fact we got a little worried at one point...because we had pulled over on the side of SR 19 in the forest...and even though we sat there for maybe 15 minutes...and NEVER SAW ANOTHER SOUL...

I thought we'd somehow missed the end of the world... :)

Yeah Frances and Jeanne are the ones im talkin about. They both made landfall within like a 5mile distance of eachother about a week and a half apart. Craziest shit I have EVER seen when it comes to weather phenomenon. One actually came off the coast of africa, headed towards florida, turned north like it was going to completely miss the US, and did a complete circle and whacked us in nearly the samer spot. The eyes literally went over the same areas both time. It was actually amzing to see something like that.

Ok time to put the tinfoil hat back on. There have been rumers for years that the Russians and us can control the weather. I think it was in the 50s that they wanted to drop a nuke in a hurricane to see if it would break up  Yea I know your nuts YUGO  :freedom:
