I really liked "Dies the Fire" by SM Stirling. Yes, it has a bit of a sci-fi twist (SHTF due to a slight change in laws of physics rather than economic collapse, plague, etc.) but I found the post-event chaos and the short to mid-term challenges and emerging neo-tribalism to be extremely well written and conceived. The book is number one of a trilogy. The second and third books are nowhere near as good IMO, however, the first is great and can stand alone. Any other widely available good reads out there? Also just finished "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. Post-nuke. Very grim. Very good.

Lights Out was pretty good...especially for an amateur writer...

Triple Ought (now published as "Patriots-Surviving the Coming Collapse")

I'll have to think of a couple others...

"On the Beach"by Neville Schute....a classic novel and made into a movie. They redid the movie a few years ago and that one was good too. "Warday" by Whitley Schrieber is another personal favorite.

PU some books this weekend...

I am currently reading "Judgement Day" by James F. David...pretty good so far...another story with a religious bent...though I haven't come to any conclusions as to the direction of the "bent". ;)

I also bought a soft cover copy of "The Road" and a paperback copy of "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand....

Went to the library to see what they had for sale on Saturday....

They've upped their "deal" to 7 hardbacks for $5...and lowered the paperbacks to a dime a piece...or 15 for a buck!

I ended up picking up 8 hardbacks...and 6 paperbacks...varying types...sci-fi, crime, action etc....
'
Got to the counter with this stack of books...and the lady says... "Two dollars"....

I had to ask her if she was serious...

She was...2 bucks...gotta LUV that!!! :)

This isn't a book, but if any of you get the chance to see "Panic in Year Zero" do so. This movie was made in the 50's about a family from LA surviving a nuke attack on the USA. It stars Ray Malland and he also directed the movie.

Lucifer's Hammer is an excellent post TEOTWAWKI

It's about a group of people who interact with each other before and after a comet hits the earth. Long book but worth the time to read it.

I just read The Road in two days...(I usually read 15-20 min. a day...but this one "caught" me)

Dude...MAN... What a wonderfully described yet bleak, sad story...it ended just as it had to...even though it's not exactly what I would call a "happy ending"...but then....given the circumstances...there was no way it could.

I recommend this one wholeheartedly! :)

How about Camp of the Saints , by Jean Raspail ? Scary , written in 1973 , reads like it was written this year .

I guess I haven't read any TEOTWAWKI novels. A couple SHTF books I've read are Unintended Consequences and Molon Labe. I also thought Atlas Shrugged was decent, but again, I don't know that they qualify as end of the world scenarios.

As far as my fav TEOTWAWKI movie, it'd have to be Shaun of the Dead

In order of what I would recommend as far as post-TEOTWAWKI novels:

Alas Babylon

Lucifer's Hammer

Patriot's, Surviving the Coming Collapse

Earth Abides

Lights Out

Deep Winter

Hatchet

Tunnel in the Sky

The Stand

Wolf and Iron

These all have good story lines plus good info. I've read pretty much every post-TEOTWAWKI book written, and these are the only ones I remember going back and reading again. There are other good ones, but I like these the best.

I agree but they are some damn good reads. After you get into them a bit they start to get strange.

as a few others mentions ... Alas Babylon. This one is rather dated but there is still some thought provoking ideas and real world problems that are worked out.

Another one I liked was the Omega Sub series. It was more sciFi and happened about 20 years from now. Basically that was a EOTWAWKI with a combination of nuke and bio bombs and the survivors were mostly ultra aggressive zombies. Even the wildlife had become extra aggressive. The submarine was under the ice cap when it happened and one of the few survivors. Just fun reading, not much help for real world. The series was up to 6 or 7 book but it was never finished. It was written by JD Cammeron. He may had died or it just didn't sell, unknown.

I taped that off cable TV. It is a good pretty realistic look at a nuclear aftermath done on a budget.
