Shot at in the Phillippines coup of 1989. Almost run over by a M113 APC.

Shot at by Iraqi Mirages during the Gulf War. Gotta love chaff launchers and the CIWS.

Was on the beach in Somalia but that was way before the Blackhawk Down thing. 1991-1992. Support and ordnance disposal.

Never been in one in the US. Pulled my gun a couple times, but when I was working at Anthony's. Outside the US, well almost too many times to list them, but then I am/was looking for trouble.

I fought in the battle of An Nasiriyah in OIF I. I was in 2d Battalion 8th Marines. We fought from March 23, 2003 to about April 10th, 2003. Most of our enemy was Fayadeen soldiers and the civilians they forced to fight. This battle is mostly known by the name of Ambush Alley. After April 10th, 2003 we moved north toward Baghdad to a town of Al Kut which was our turn toward humanitarian assistance rather than combat.

The worst part of the battle was actually a 90 min friendly fire fight incident between us and 2d LAR. There were several TOW missles, lots of 25mm and lots of small arms fire recieved. We had 32 casualties on our side from this particalur incident.

I have been stabbed in jail fighting against the gangs in there.I fought in the Grand Nationals several times as a heavy weight. In one tournment I had my arm broke blocking a kick after a fight I just won.I won that tournment.I have had over 100 fights in the ring and on the streets of Chicago.I was arrest twice for attempted murder. Both were self defense. My police record state these charges. I have no convictions.I once saved a old man who was being robbed by three illegal immigrants out side his bar.I decided to make it my business. I got out of my car with a batball bat and walked up behind the three of them.I cracked all three over the head with the bat.The owner thank me.I drove off and the next day his son thank me for saving his dad.The police just pick them off the ground and arrested them.I was in a bar once and three gang members tried to rob the bar. They attacked the barmaid behind the bar. One jumped over the counter and went for the register while I fought the other two.By the time the police got there I was done with them. I had by foot on his head and told him to go back to sleep. The three were black gang member and one got away. The two were charged with strungarm robbery and battery. There is more.I caught a rapist that was wanted for 8 rapes in Chicago.I shot a gang member attacking my car with a sawoff shot gun. There a lot more. I was ran over by a mad man and almost killed on the side walk.I was in the hospital for over two years recovering. He was charged with attempted murder and was recieved eight years. Some people believe it was a hit on me.I'm not a bad guy or mob type ,just a lot of bad things seem to happen to me.Chicago is a bad place.

I lived in Israel in a town on the border with the West Bank. During flare-ups there was quite a bit of fighting not far from our back yard - lots of automatic small-arms fire, burning tires, and some helicopter gun-ships firing rockets into nearby Palestinian targets.

Not conducive to bedtime...:(

Cuban revolution, not as a combatant obviously. I was a kid, revolution was going on in the eastern section of Cuba, which is where we lived. We lived in 2 trailers in the mountains with 2" armor plating around them. My dad was captured by the guerillas, released after 2 weeks. He was US citizen, being naturalized during WW2, Cuban born. The night Batista escaped, guerillas were all around trying to shoot his plane down.

Not in military but I've had guns pulled on me three times, shot at once. Had knives pulled on me and been in a couple of bad fights. I may have drawn down on someone once or twice. I grew up in East Orange NJ and went to school in NYC during the 80s when the place was pretty rough. My cousin was a dealer with a penchant for pissing people of and one of three bi-racial kids growing up in an all black area in the 70s.

All my best survival skills are the hard learned kind. But I still worry about real fierce gunplay where running to safety isn't an option. Any tips on mindset?

Legio, I was a City Patrolman in Santa Fe Texas. A Sergeant in the Galveston Co Sheriff's Dept. A RR Special Agent in Houston, until I nearly got my arm pulled off in an accident. I came back as an Environmental Police Officer for the City of San Antonio. I retired 2 years ago and the Constable on the east side of SA asked me to work a contract as a campus cop at a charter school.

Enlisted in Army back in 71. Signed up for medical training. Fully expected to see Nam. Ended up working in 2nd Gen. Army Hospital in Landstau Germany. Only combat I saw was combating injury and disease, and believe me, that kept our hands full.

I came close a couple times to serving (ROTC, acceptance to USAF OTS), but my life just never worked out that way.

One funny story from college though, that I hope you'll enjoy for the humor, revolved around some 'almost service.'

For those of you who remember the early days of flight simulators, Microprose's F117 Stealth Fighter was one of the first DECENT games of that sort. Introduced in late 1991/early '92 (memory eludes me...), we played the HELL out of that, on some VERY high end 386/33 computers at college in the day (I was GM of the campus radio station, and had a 386 in my office, so we had the occasional "staff meeting" over a game or twelve...;)).

My best friend and I were considerably older than most of the undergrads - in late '92, I was 25 and he was 24. We were sitting at lunch one day in late '92, discussing our latest 'missions,' as we'd both been flying the Desert Storm scenarios pretty heavily. A couple of freshman gals were sitting at the next table, and must have overheard us; with big, wide, admiring eyes, they asked us - almost breathlessly - "Were you guys in Desert Storm?"

Without missing a beat, I deadpanned, "In a manner of speaking."

My best friend LOST it, :rofl:

Thanks to all of you who have served!

Never been in the type of combat being referred to here, however:

I was shot at with an automatic weapon when I was 15. It was a couple of drunken Marines out poaching deer. I was in track at the time, and was running through the woods. At first I didn't understand why the bark was flying off the trees, and then I heard the reports. I understood real fast what was going on.

Forced to engage in a knife fight with a couple of muggers when I was in college. I won! :-)

Was shot at in a K-Mart parking lot.
