An aerial image of Iraq-Iran border
The US military has constructed four advanced bases 20 miles from Iraq's border with Iran, a senior Iraqi police officer has announced.
The bases, equipped with missile launch pads, have been set up over the past four months on the Iraq-Iran border; Iraqi al-Noor newspaper quoted the official as saying.
He added that one of the bases has been located 30 km (20 miles) from the first border town with Iran and houses remote-controlled launching pads as well as radar systems similar to ones used in Kuwait during the first Persian Gulf war.
"The bases do not serve military intentions and its staff would not be military personnel."
According to the official, the bases are only precautionary measures in case of a military strike against Israel by Iran.
A team consisting of high-profile US marines, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) alongside Pentagon experts oversee the bases.

Hey come on Haliburton/KBR has to make some more money to. How does a Iraqi police officer know, "The bases do not serve military intentions and its staff would not be military personnel." ? IP's are some of the most crooked mutharuckers over there right now. I dont doubt we are building bases heck think about all the ones we built then abandoned or gave to the Iraqis. How many patriot systems the marines have or what are there ADA assets these days? Supposedly in the Army the Patriot is getting phased out but im not sure to what or when. Why so close? We dont have to be that close for ADA heck before the Iraq war began we sat in kuwait waiting and the Iraqis had long range Arty 45km that could hit us so they sent Apaches to take it out but the ADA guys were further behind us shooting down the scuds that were launched.

Do we control any airfields in Iraq? I ask this because the best way for Israal to drag us into a conflict with Iran would be to simply launch an airstrike knowing full well that their planes lack the range to make it home. After dropping their bombs on Iran, the Israelis would "announce" to us that their aircraft were going to land in Iraq to refuel. We would pretty much have no choice but to allow it, its not like we are going to shoot Israeli planes down or deny them permission to land if they are out of gas.

It is pretty safe to say that we control ALL the airfields in Iraq.

Last time I was there in 2006 we didnt control every single airfield but the Iraqis do not have functional airforce so there would not be a problem with them landing in Iraq. On the other hand the military uses mass amounts of fuel everyday in Iraq which a lot of it comes from Turkey, if they cut off fuel shipments that means no driving or flying. The Iraqi military gets some of its fuel from its own country and some from us. Fuel is a big issues over there. They may be better off trying to get dowm to Qatar. we have a huge base down there for stratigic bombers and ship refueling. Turkey will most likely side with Iran if we bomb them.

I doubt that. Turks are Sunni muslims and do not like Shiites. None of the Arab countries want to see Iran develop nukes. Turkey is almost alone among the predominently Muslim nations in that it has good relations with Israel. Turkey is also a member of NATO and is trying to become a member of the European Union. I dont see them siding with Iran on this one.

Seeing Turkey side with western powers would discredit from the muslim nations which are trying to unite themselves. I understand the whole shia / sunni thing but when it comes down to muslims against western ideals I guess we will just have to see. (I got that tidbit from a report I read awhile back). A couple of european countries are getting its oil from Iran so if we bomb them they will be pissed at us to.

Turkey is NATO though. It's well within their best interests to chose the proper side.

Heck France and Italy are NATO but where do they get the bulk of their oil? IRAN! Sorry fellas but NATO dont mean crap when your population wants fuel and byproducts to run the country on. And when supply is not keeping up with demand from other countries where else are they supposed to get it?

Greece will take care of them. Turkey would be nowhere without NATO.
