m vehicle has not one computer. no microchips. no carb. No ignition system. no electric pumps. it is massive, 4WD and EPA rated for 30 mpg. It fits in anywhere in the southeast.
Its my 1984 diesel Suburban 4x4.
This is a fellow forum members from CK5.com I want mine to look like this when im done. right now ts plain. this picture should get the point across as far as capability.

anyways. the 6.2 liter diesel in chevy's has a mechanical injection pump and mechanical lift pump.
SHTF proof. or as shtf proof as you can get for cheap. You can pick these up for a couple hundred bucks all over the southeast.

I got it for 1500. The reason I paid so much is because I really wanted a low milage diesel with power options.
The thing only has 120 thousand miles and was sitting in a barn for 5 years before i bought it.
Changed the fluids and the thing fires up everytime. Its incredible.
The Kelly blue book for my truck is something like $600 or $800 dollars. It just came down to I couldnt ifnd any other 4wd trucks with air conditioning and cruise control. (and the paint is decent)
So if you look for late 70s to early 90s suburbanns-they are cheap. Get the kelly blue book value and go make an offer. Most are listed at 1500-2000, with KBB at about $600. You could walk away for $750. Just shop around. It took me 3 months

good looing ride if your looking to buy one you can go online and check goverment auction sites (not military) but forest service, highway depts, ETC. My buddy gets a couple a year and picks them up cheap. some are in great shape others not so much depends on what u want to spend

haha ya. anything over 1.2 ton was hard to find. . . esp with power options. I am so tired or manual windows and locks.
it doesnt really matter much. . . i plan on boxing the frame and reinforcing it a good bit as well as swapping the axles out.
I have the picture in my head. I have the tools. I have the know how I just dont have money. :(
hopefully I can start in the fall. Im expecting some $$$ then

Now put on a huge frome bumper with deer bars and a winch and some side steps for extra protection and your golden, Maybe even a PVC Snorkel kit.
My 1 ton has the mechanical engine but has a 4L80E trans. I'm considering a down grade to a 700R4 to make it completely non-electronic.

Don't forget the lockers and mud tires if you are in the Southeast.

30 MPG???? I drove an old Chevy diesel 2wd for awhile and it was more like 20 MPG. Maybe it was the way I drove it?
Still, a great find for the money!
As for the paint ... It looks cool in the green but ...
I think for post SHTF I would paint it so it looked a lot less military or governmental to the sheeple. It might draw unwanted scrutiny. The stock paint scheme would blend in better.

haha ya thats what the EPA estimated it at back in 1984. now days- i see about 18-20 on the freeway, and less on city. still not bad.
about the paint, i agree. I want it all blacked out. black paint, windows, bumpers, mirrors, rims. . .etc. but i am not that good with the spray gun to do black. Its the hardest color to spray. (i think)
we will see what happens. I have been taking to the wife about a 72-73 blazer full convertible with a 6.2/6.5 diesel. or a YJ wrangler with a diesel conversion. The sub might just stay a permanent SHTF/hunting/camping/ road trip vehicle.

thanks man. i appreciate it but i am going to pass. . .
I want a 14 bolt rear and i am in north carolina. . .
ill find some locally. . . Thanks though
ummmm...guys. Watch govliquidation.com for an M1008 or M1028 pickup. They have all the axles, brackets, springs (heavier duty than civilian), bits and pieces you are all talking about, including the Detroit locker in the 14 bolt and a Dana60 front with a TracLoc.
Plus, they are cheap, in non-running condition.
Best regards,
Bob
check govliquidation.com for trucks available at Ft. Bragg or Seymour-Johnson. (see my previous post).
Best regards,
Bob

There's TWO Sub's that have been 'converted' to military usage on this thread over on Steel Soldiers.
The first one is green and is absolutely awesome. The second one is tan and there's only one pix, but it does give you and idea of what desert tan would look like on a Sub.
I've owned several, including one diesel. They are really nice trucks.
