We at Happy Hovel realize that we could all do with some extra help amassing our much needed Food Storage.

To this end we have collected a list of foods that can be purchased, from your local Food Market or larger stores, such as Sams Club and Costco here in the USA.

Please be aware that most “canned foods” will last for many, many years if kept dry and cool. This will not prevent you from canning your own foods but it is there for you to at least start your storage at a reduced cost.

At present in our uncertain world we are experiencing either floods snow or droughts and all of these weather anomalies will affect your ability to be able to purchase these foods for much longer.

If your local Super Market is having a sale on any canned goods, buy a few each time you are there, you will be happy you did.

recently a riverboat was dug out of the bed of the mississippi river. in it's hold were several hundred glass canning jars of food. the amazing thing is, upon opening a few of the jars, the salvage team found that the food was STILL fit to eat! when they had it tested they found that, while the nutritional quality had deteriorated somewhat, eating the food would not only not make you sick, but would sustain you for a long period of time.

this doesn't mean that home canned food should be stored for years without rotating and consuming it, but given modern canning methods, food preserved in this way could quite possibly out last those of us who store it.
