View Full Version : New Ham
I went to take my Tech test this morning. Drove 75 miles one way to take it as the next time it is given here in my town I'll be at a drill weekend (Navy Reserve). Passed with a 33/35. I took the General for grins after being talked into it (not very hard) by one of the VE's. Not so good, but better than I expected considering I hadn't studied for it - 22/35.
So, I'll be rereading the info here that I've already read and I'll probably be asking some questions. IRLP/Echolink definitely interests me, so I'll be researching it. If you have any info, feel free to pass it along!
73's all.
WOO-HOO.. 'Nother radiohead in the mix!!!
Welcome C-ya & congrats on the ticket.. Wish I had more online time to help everyone out like I did in the past but am working from ~~4AM til dark:30... 7 days a week. Had to days off since august first :bang: :bang: It's called makin hay while the sun shines.. Got a sweet nest egg for winter.. :)

Anyhoo..FB on the test.. snag some gear & have fun with it.
A good place to fence questions is at stormsurgeforums.com Lotta survival minded hams hang their hat there..

FN, thanks - and no biggy. I understand it when a job has to be done. You've put quite a lot of info out here and on the other site, so I'll have enough reading to do for awhile. Just glad I finally got it.
Now on to General!

I really need to do this and get a setup when I get back on my feet. Been meaning to but it was always one of those deals, "Ahhh, Ammo on sale, or This and this would be nice."

Thanks again guys.
ZombieHunter, I'd study the questions on qrz.com, and I'll try to find the link to the .pdf file (or I can email it to you) that I used to study with. The test is only $14, and you can take as many elements as you can, as long as you pass the one before it. I'd get the license out of the way, play around on the internet (which you already have) with Echolink or IRLP and then look for that great deal on a radio(s). I don't have a radio yet either. I'm going over to a friend's and see what he has and what is working for him. Unfortunately for me, he has more disposable income than I do!
Check here for more info as well. Looks like this is where I'll be getting my General material from.

No problem. We're in this together, right?
Also check http://ww.qsonet.com. Another "simulated" radio, but at least you can start talking.

Good deal! Back in the day ... I had to take novice and then tech. Took 'em both the same night. Now that I don't need code I should work on the General. No rush though ... No money to buy new rigs :crybaby:

Congratulations!! I took my Tech test in 1995 and moved through the ranks in 4 months (back when it was 13wpm MC to get your General). Got up to Advanced and figured I would just hold up there (didnt really want to go to 20wpm in MC either), plus, I discovered the Female sex and my priorities changed LMAO!! I was 15 at the time, made things easy to not have a life and no distractions!!
Renewed it in 2005 until 2015!! Sadly, I havent been active since 1997. It blows my mind how much technology has just about all but eliminated this most simple of communications. I remember the excitement of talking to someone in another state, then another country, now you can pick up the phone and call someone else in another state for free, and another country for pennies on the dollar!! It really saddens me to see the world of HAM radio change so dramatically and watch the older HAM's began to pass on.

i prefer to cook my new ham at low heat (180-200 degrees) for 24 hours or more. they always come out melt in your mouth tender. ;)
Well, I tell ya what. So much for the idea of taking General in a couple of weeks. Contemplating the move, plus OT at work, and I haven't studied more than about 20 minutes.
I'm still going to study and try to be ready, but if I don't feel that I am, I'm not gonna waste $14.
